2017 was a phenomenal year for entertainment arguably one of the best in a very long time so here’s hoping 2018 is just as good. To make the list the movie or game has to have a confirmed release date for 2018. So as much as I’m looking forward to The Last Of Us Part 2, Kingdom Hearts 3, God Of War, and the new Cloverfield movie they will not be making the list.
20. Ready Player One
Release Date: March 30th
Director: Steven Spielberg
Let me just start by saying I love the book this is based off of, in fact it’s one of my favorite books of all time, so naturally I was excited for the movie release especially after Spielberg was announced as the director. Unfortunately after the latest trailer I’m now less than excited for the films release. The film appears to divert completely from the source material and also appears to be Holywood video game cash in, the movie. I’m still cautiously optimistic but right now it’s not looking great.
19. Mission Impossible 6
Release Date: July 27th
Not too much to say about this one, it’s another Mission Impossible. There is a fair amount of hype considering how good the past few have been, So here’s hoping it’s another fun spy thriller with a decent plot and plenty of over the top action set pieces.
Release Date: December 21st
There’s no denying that the DC cinematic universe has had a rocky start but there’s also no denying that Jason Momoa was one of if not the best part of Justice League, and with James Wan with directorial duties I have no doubt that this could be the next Wonder Woman.
17. Solo ; A Star Wars Story
Release Date: May 25th
Director: Ron Howard
I know I’m going to get a ton of shit for this entry but hear me out. I love Star Wars like most people, but after hearing about the development hell this movie is going through I can’t help thinking that this movie is going to suck. It fired it’s two main directors two weeks before filming was supposed to end, hired Ron Howard who is a terrible director (in my opinion/go under IMDB and look at his track record because believe me he’s made some shit piles, plus he got his friend who wrote Batman and F##king Robin a job writing The Dark Tower script which spoiler alert for fans of the Dark Tower book series that’s actually really good, that movie suck and sucked bad). Plus they announced this week they are reshooting the reshoots so yeah be very skeptical going into the theater is my advice.
16. Isle Of Dogs
Director: Wes Anderson
Again not much to say about this one, It’s the next stop motion animated movie from Wes Anderson which if you are a film buff like me that name means something because all of his films are phenomenal. Seriously if you haven’t seen a Wes Anderson film go watch one (I personally recommend Fantastic Mr. Fox or The Grand Budapest Hotel because but both are excellent) because nobody makes movies like he does.
Medium: Video game
Release Date: 2018
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC
(Warning this entry contains strong language from a very pissed off die hard Mass Effect fan, enjoy!)
This game better be a f##king masterpiece. Sorry for that but it’s true seeing as this game is the reason Mass Effect Andromeda sucked, so yeah die hard fans of Bioware like me are a little pissed they put their technical cleanup team Bioware Montreal to work on Andromeda whilst they worked on Anthem. I truly hope this game is good I really do but after Andromeda and the whole EA loot box controversy my hopes aren’t as high as they should be.
14. Red Dead Redemption 2
Medium: Video Game
Release Date: Early to Mid 2018
Developer: Rock Star Games
Publisher: Rock Star Games
Easily one of the most hyped games of the year Red Dead Redemption 2 is the sequel to the wildly (no pun intended) popular game Red Dead Redemption. If you don’t know what that is picture GTA but in the old west but a little different. My one complaint is that it’s not coming to PC at least not right away so here’s hoping A. it’s good and B. we get a little love on the PC.
13. Monster Hunter World
Medium: Video Game
Release Date: January 27th for PS4, Xbox One, Autumn 2018 for PC (what’s with the lack of PC love lately?)
For those of you who don’t know what Monster Hunter is it’s a JRPG series where you hunt monster only this is the Monster hunter franchises first wide release in the U.S. As someone who is a big fan of JRPGs and just RPGs in general I can’t wait to get my hands on this when it comes to PC later this year.
12. The New Mutants
April 13th updated:February 22 2019
What can I really say about this one? It’s a horror movie set in the X-men universe. As a massive fan of the X-men franchise and horror movies I am absolutely hyped for this one. Here’s hoping that the team behind this knows what they’re doing because horror is not an easy genre to do well.
God damn it Fox, you just had to announce this hours after I published this. On the bright side Deadpool 2 is coming out a month earlier.
11.Pacific Rim: Uprising
Release Date: March 23rd
Director: Steven S. DeKnight
While the first Pacific Rim wasn’t perfect, it was a fun, immensely enjoyable, Cheesy movie about giant mechs fighting huge monsters directed by Guillermo Del Toro, What else could you want from an action movie? While Del Toro won’t be directing this one I still have high hopes that it will be a fun cheesy thrill ride like the first one.
10. Shadow Of The Colossus (PS4 Remaster)
Medium: Video Game
Release Date: February 6th
As someone who’s never gotten to play the original PS2 masterpiece, I have to say I am really hyped. The original was a cinematic masterpiece (from what I’ve seen and heard) that helped make cinematic gaming what it is today. The graphics and physics were thought to be impossible on playstaion 2 hardware yet it was and helped pioneer graphics up to the PS3.
9. The Incredibles 2
Release Date: June 15th
Director: Brad Bird
This movie is long overdue. I’ve been waiting for this movie since I was a child, I’m a full-grown adult now, let that sink in. It’s been 14 years since the original. I think most of us would have preferred this over Cars 2 and 3 but hey better late than never I guess. I just really hope that this lives up to the hype (It’ll also be hilarious to see the theater packed full of 20 year olds). A little advice to Pixar maybe don’t wait 14 years next time you want to make a sequel.
8.Bohemian Rhapsody (aka Freddy Mercury biopic)
Release Date: December 25th
While biopics are a dime a dozen now days this looks like it has the potential to be something special. It follows the band Queens rise in popularity up until the untimely death of the lead singer Freddy Mercury. If anything it will be an interesting look at one of the most famous bands of all time.
Medium: Video Game
Release Date: some time in mid 2018
Spider-Man has had a rocky history in video games. There have been various Spider-Man games in the past some of then good, a lot of them were just o.k. and then you have the really bad ones. So people were skeptical of a new Spider-Man game but that skepticism soon turned into hype when it was announced that Insomniac would be the studio developing the game. And with the few glimpses we’ve gotten at various E3’s this looks like it’s going to be one of the good ones.
6. X-Men: Dark Pheonix
Release Date: November 2nd 2018
Director: Simon Kinberg
Those who know me know I’m a huge X-Men fan probably a bigger fan than I should be given given the franchises track record, regardless I can’t helped but get hyped every time they release a new one. Lately Fox has had a really good lineup of X-men movies so this will probably end up being one of the better films in the franchise. here’s hoping it’s not another The Last Stand.
5. Far Cry 5
Medium: Video Game
Release Date: March 27th 2018
Platforms: Xbox one, PS4, PC
The hype train has officially left the station on this one given how good the series has been thus far and Ubisofts recent track record. What excites me the most though about this one is that it takes place in rural America instead of a far off foreign country (though I will say I very much enjoyed how well the previous games emulated going to a foreign country) like the series normally does. This entry seems to have a lot it wants to say about society which could be a good or bad thing (personally I think it will be interesting to see how the handle the current political situation) but it looks like this will continue the series tradition of letting you mess around in a huge open world sandbox and I’m down for it.
4. West World Season 2
Medium: T.V. show
Release Date: July 2017
The first season of West World took audiences by surprise (myself included) with how complexly detailed the world and the mystery surrounding it truly was. The series has been full of twists and turns that had me literally yelling at my t.v. in horror at some moments and season 2 looks no different.
3. Deadpool 2
June 1st Update:May 18
Director: David Leitch
Deadpool was easily one of the best movies of 2016. It was a critical and commercial darling for it’s weird, wacky humor and unique sense of style. It has since spawned a rabid fan base and judging by the looks of the sequel the fan base is only going to get bigger from here.
2. Fantastic Beasts 2
Release Date: November 16th 2018
Director: David Yates
As a massive Harry Potter fan growing up I was pleasantly surprised by the first Fantastic Beast. It told an interesting story and showcased a corner of that universe that I had always wanted to see, and it looks like the sequel is only going to expand upon that. Where ever they take the story next I’m down.
1:Avengers: Infinity War
Release Date: May 4th
Director:Joe Russo, Anthony Russo
Serving as part 1 of a two part finale to the current MCU, Infinity War finally brings the current cinematic universe to a close and finally introduces the series main villain Thanos. Judging from the first trailer this will be the darkest Marvel movie to date and won’t shy away from killing off main characters.
Thanks you so much for reading. Sorry it took an extra day but I hope it was worth it because I put a lot of work into this. Thanks as always and keep an eye out for more daily posts.
