Top 15 Best Games of 2017

2017 has been a phenomenal year for Video games giving us memorable titles that will affect the industry for years to come.  Now I know this is different from the content I normally put out but here me out for a minute. While yes, it is a top 15 list it’s a bit different. A lot of these games I wanted to review but sadly i’m only one guy and wasn’t able to upon their release so each entry will be a sort of mini review whilst still ranking them. To make the list the game needs to have been released THIS year so this excludes Remasters and ports, so this excludes games like Kingdom Hearts Remastered,  Call Of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered, L.A. Noire Remastered, Doom for the Nintendo Switch and a few others. I also will have needed to play the game in some capacity, seeing as I’m only one guy I was only able to play so many games this year. However games I didn’t play still have a chance of a Bonus slot/ Honorable mentions.

Starting off the list is Observer, an indie Sci-Fi horror game from the team behind Layers Of Fear. Now this game took me by surprise, from the trailer it looked very Blade Runner esque even Cast Rutger Hauer who played Roy in the original Blade Runner. While it is very Blade Runner in it’s inspiration it quickly becomes apparent that this is it’s own thing, and that’s great. It goes out of it’s way to screw with the players mind changing what they think they know about the game several times before it ends. It tackles Sci-Fi and horror masterfully getting the player to actually think instead of just scaring them senseless. It was one of the scariest and smartest horror games I’ve played since SOMA, and it’s one I won’t forget any time soon.

Sonic Mania is a remake of sorts but it features new levels and is not technically a remaster so hey I’m counting it. The game brings Sonic back to his 2-D platforming glory days when the Sonic V.S. Mario debate didn’t immediately result in the other side erupting in laughter. No, this is Sonic back in his prime, featuring good old-fashioned level design and platforming. It makes the player nostalgic for when Sonic was good, and wets the appetite of those looking for a good 2-D Platformer.

There’s not too much I’m going to say about this one seeing as I reviewed it earlier this year. The game is honestly a blast especially with friends. You and three of your friends start out in a plane filled with 100 players  flying over a remote island. You then must parachute down to the island and take on those other players in a massive hunger games style fight to the death. You must scavenge guns, medical supplies ammo, armor, ETC in order to survive. It may still be in early access but I highly recommend that you check it out especially if you got friends.

Destiny 2 is kind of an oddball. The original Destiny garnered mixed reviews upon launch but gained a hardcore fan base after the launch of several DLC for the game. And now we got a sequel. I will say it is a vast improvement over the original when it first launched. Not to say it doesn’t have its issues, it does. For example while yes there is an actual campaign this time but it’s still not great. I mean it’s enjoyable but it still feels very paint by the numbers, been there done that. It just doesn’t live up to Bungie’s original Halo trilogy or Halo Reach, which help make story telling in video games what it is today. I will say I do think the game is worth getting especially if you have friends who play the game. Just be warned that the game is VERY time-consuming if you take it seriously. If you do all the weekly rewards you’re looking at about 5-10 hours a week, 20 if you’re doing three characters. So I’ll end this one by saying think hard before you by this one. If you like time consuming RPG’s with a very grindy end game then go get this one you’ll enjoy it, but if that’s not your thing maybe think twice.

Resident Evil 7 is the long awaited return to form for the franchise that help pioneer the horror genre in video games, and it doesn’t disappoint. This is one of the best horror games I’ve played in a long time. The game puts you in the shoes of Ethan Winter, who travels to a remote farm house in Dulvey Louisiana after hearing that his missing wife may still be alive. The game is by far the scariest game I’ve played this year (probably because I didn’t play Outlast 2). Either way if you love horror games you have to try this one.

Assassin’s Creed Origins is the return of the Assassin’s Creed franchise after it took last year off, And the time shows the game is vastly larger and is more polished than its predecessors. the game takes place in ancient Egypt and follows the founding of the Assassin’s brotherhood. The game is one of my personal favorites of the year. I’m going to keep this one short but will say if you liked The Witcher 3 definitely pick this one up. It’s not perfect (the cut scenes can be quite laggy upon writing this) but if your willing to look past a few minor technical bugs there’s a fun RPG.

Wolfenstein 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the 2014 reboot The New Order, a game which I absolutely loved. Suffice it to say the sequel lived up to the hype and then some. It delivers the same fantastic gunplay, cinematic story, and character moments fans of the series loved about the New Order while still taking the series to new, albeit weird heights. I find it great that we got a single player only FPS in a year where we really didn’t get many of those types of games. If you love a great story and smooth gunplay, pick this one up.

ow I know some of you will get mad at me including this because of the loot boxes, but if you manage to look past that you get one of the best games of the year and one of the best sequels in recent memory. The game takes what made the first one special and damn near perfects it. The only real problem I had with this game was the shadow wars end game which almost forces you to buy loot boxes. Fortunately you can buy them with currency you can earn in game (the currency is almost laughably easy to get). Now I’m  not saying this is right, there really should NOT be loot boxes in a 60$ game but at least it gives you an out (COUGH unlike Battlefront 2). If you were a fan of the first one or love Lord Of The Rings this is probably worth your while.

Super Mario Odyssey is a strange game. One that I was conflicted on when I first reviewed it. So I went back and replayed it and finally understood where everyone was coming from. I grew up on these games like a lot of people so the franchise has a special place in my heart. So I’m happy to say this game is pretty close to the master piece everyone else sees the game as. It has a few issues, but if you grew up on the series as I did you are going to fall in love with this game.

Kicking off the final 5 is the indie gem Cuphead. This game was developed by only 3 people. Each and every frame was hand drawn to look like a 1930’s Max Fliecher-esque cartoon. The developers of this game clearly poured their hearts and souls into this game. Each stage is absolutely beautiful but also challenging. For those who don’t know CupHead has earned a reputation as one of the hardest games of the year, but the game never feels impossible. Each time you died you feel like it’s your fault. Even tough I only made it about half way through the game I feel like I can judge it properly. The game is a God damn master piece that I won’t soon forget.

Disappointment hit the gaming community earlier this year when it was announced that Platinum Game’s latest game Scalebound was being cancelled after being delayed numerous times, but there was a ray of hope for fans hoping to get their fix of Platinum Games in 2017. That ray of hope was Nier: Automata. Nier:Automata was probably the biggest pleasant surprise we got in 2017. This game is fantastic. From it’s engaging swordplay, to shifting game types, level design, emotional story, just about everything in this game works. It’s more than just your typical hack and slash. Due to spoilers I won’t get into much detail, but if you like Platinum Games, or have even an inkling that you may like this game, go out and get it seriously you will not regret it.

Horizon: Zero Dawn was another pleasant surprise this year. I was intrigued from what little was shown at E3, and I’m now happy they didn’t show much. The game is best played going in blind. I will say Horizon: Zero Dawn barrows a lot of elements we see a lot in games, but it takes them and absolutely perfects them. Things like finding fast ravel points becomes new and exciting again, and scavenging for materials grants a sense of accomplishment. Overall this game is amazing and if you have a PS4 it’s a must have.

Did I Complete it?: No (the game is 90 hours long, and I simply don’t have the time to complete the game, though I really wish I did.)

My Score: S or 10 (judging from what I played). (Also this is the first S or 10/10 score I’ve given).

Persona 5 is the 5th entry in the long running Persona franchise, and from what I played of it is a F–king masterpiece that needs to be commended. We live in a world where we are charged 60$ for a 4-7 hour game, and half the time it’s the same exact game every year with a slightly altered title and slightly altered graphics, and 90% of the time they launch unplayable (Looking at you Call of Duty). And here we have a $60 game that’s 90 hours long launched with little to no bugs, no DLC, no season pass, no loot boxes, nothing but a good old fashion single player game. The game has so much to see and do in it. The puts you in the role of a high school student and tasks you with juggling your classes, studying, making friends, keeping those friends, all whilst masquerading as a super hero after school. I know that I will probably get some backlash for putting this game on the list and rating it like I did when I haven’t even completed the game, but if you have played the game, I think you’ll probably agree that this game is at least worth a look.

Finally at number 1 we have Breath Of The Wild. Breath Of The Wild is easily one of the best Zelda games if not one of the best Nintendo games. The game takes modern gaming norms and perfects then. Finding fast travel towers becomes an engaging challenge. If you are a Zelda fan you probably already own this game but if you have a Nintendo Switch and don’t have this, or get A switch for Christmas, this game is a must buy.

Now before I end the list here are a few bonus games that didn’t quite make the list because I didn’t get around to playing them but have heard great things about. those I didn’t play will now state so in the description part. These bonus games are not rank in any particular order.
