(Sorry the review was late I will be back on schedule tomorrow, to make up for it expect a second review tonight.)
The Big Sick is based on the true events of how comedian Kumail Nanjiani met his wife Emily v Gordon. I know this the premise alone will turn off a lot of people,it didn’t appeal to me either. I saw the premise, wrote it off as just another romantic comedy, then completely forgot it existed, then the overwhelmingly positive reviews came out (a whopping 98% rotten tomatoes) which forced me to take notice as a massive film buff. And after seeing the movie I have one thing to say, don’t make the same mistake I did. Don’t write this off as just another romantic comedy because it’s not. It’s so much more than I thought it had any right to be. The Big Sick is an emotional roller-coaster with a story that deserves to be heard.
Normally this is where I’d describe the plot however I don’t think my description does the story justice, so if you want to know more about the plot watch the trailer (posted below).
Kumail Nanjiani stars as himself, and gives a hilarious yet relatable performance.Zoe Kazan stars as Emily v Gordon (named Emily Gardner in the movie for some reason) and gives another funny yet relatable performance. Both the leads have amazing on-screen chemistry. Also in this movie are Ray Romano and Holly Hunter as Emily’s parents. Once again both of them are expertly cast, sharing amazing on screen chemistry.
Amazingly I found nothing wrong with this movie (Which kind of bugs me) so no cons here.
The Big Sick is expertly cast, well written, and takes viewers on an emotional roller coaster. (Side note: the last movie to make me go through so many emotions was La La Land which is a review for another time). The movie expertly tell a story of race,Religeon, and family. I will admit this movie is not for everyone but those who appreciate good storytelling will be impressed with what The Big Sick has to offer. I rate The Big Sick A+ or 10.
